Happy Mother's Day, fam! To all the moms and "like-a-moms," I wish you a wonderful Mother's Day. And if your mom has passed, I wish you fond and loving memories of her on this special day.
My own mom, Mary Davis McQuirter, is an incredible woman and I'm very grateful to be her daughter. She's my first role model for unconditional love, feminism, confidence, activism, brilliance, calmness, and patience. (Well...I'm still working on the patience!)
She decided early on that she would raise her children to be seen AND heard - unlike the custom of her childhood in South Carolina in the 1930s. And so for her three daughters, she nurtured openness and self-expression - so I can talk to her about anything and freely share my voice with the world. My mother has always been ahead of her time and she instilled that bold foundation in my sisters and me.
And it was also my mother who planted the earliest seeds in us in terms of healthier eating. As omnivores, we ate mainly from scratch and we didn’t have junk food in the house (although I didn’t appreciate it at the time!). But because of that, I was already familiar with the idea of eating healthier when I heard that fateful lecture from Dick Gregory in 1986 that would lead me to go vegetarian, then vegan.
And my mom, my sister, Marya, and I went vegan together those 32 years ago. My mom was 50 at the time, and it was no small feat to make that change. And now at 82, she's still vegan, going strong, and showing us how it's done!
So mom, I love you! Thank you for being an inspiration to me, our family, and so many others along the way. Happy Mother's Day!
Read more about my mother's story in our latest book, Ageless Vegan, and I hope you'll gift the book to your mom, too!
Have an awesome rest of the week!
